A Peaceful Escape to Lugu Lake: Our Journey Through Yunnan

Lugu Lake, known as the “Pearl of the Plateau,” sits high in the mountains on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan. Far from the big cities, it offers a quiet retreat surrounded by stunning landscapes and deep cultural history. Over the Chinese New Year holiday in 2023, we set out from Shangri-La to visit this remote yet beautiful place.

The Journey to Lugu Lake

We hired a driver for the trip, a decision that made the journey smooth and enjoyable. The roads leading to the lake were well-maintained, winding through mountains, past reservoirs, and along scenic viewpoints. At one stop, we spotted a banana tree next to the road. A local farmer lived nearby and sold us a banana straight from his small plantation. It was a simple but memorable moment, connecting us with daily life in this remote area.

Staying by the Lake

Lugu Lake doesn’t have big cities or budget hotels. The area is more relaxed, with smaller private hotels offering peaceful lake views. We found a beautiful guesthouse with a cozy room overlooking the water. Right downstairs, a local family ran a small BBQ restaurant, filling the air with the smoky aroma of grilled meat.

Exploring the Area

Before sunrise, I went for a run to test how it feels to run at high altitude. While the elevation wasn’t an issue, encountering patrolling dogs was unsettling. After about 6-7 km, I decided to turn back rather than risk an unwanted chase.

Later in the day, we took a boat tour to a small island. We had a great small climb on top of this little island and could enjoy a great view on the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Later we enjoyed a peaceful ride across the clear water. Renting an electric bicycle through an app, we rode almost the entire way around the lake. We stopped often. Sometimes for the view, sometimes for the local food, and sometimes just to take in the silence. The lake is not crowded, and it was easy to find quiet spots along the shore.

What to Expect

Lugu Lake is not a place for nightlife or packed itineraries. It’s a retreat, perfect for slowing down after the busy markets and ancient towns of Lijiang and Dali. With fewer distractions, you can truly take in the landscape, the food, and the unique Mosuo culture. Which is a unique ethnic group known for their matriarchal society. In Mosuo culture, lineage is traced through the mother, and women often hold significant authority within the family.

However, it’s best to bring some snacks and drinks since stores and restaurants are limited. We did not and ended up having instant noodles for late dinner on the first evening.

Whether you come to Lugu Lake for the views, the culture, or just a break from city life, it’s a destination that offers something rare, true peace and quietness.
